Mantra: Shout it Out
By: Lara Harrington, ISSA, ACSM

We are in week one of the 10 in 10 Challenge and I know the first thing people will want to do is slack on their mantra, but the mantra is nonnegotiable. This may induce widespread eye rolling, but we are sticklers about it for good reason.

Most of us have very busy minds, we talk to ourselves all day, every day. The quality of this self talk is a major factor in our health and happiness. I may even go as far as to say, it is the most important factor. The things we say to ourselves influence the way we feel about ourselves, the people in our lives and our environment. It shapes our selfesteem, affects how we act, how we make decisions, and generally how we respond to life.

Negative affirmations like “I look so fat,” or ” I will never be able to do that” are selffulfilling and will sabotage you... the same is true for positive thoughts they are selffulfilling. The first step in all great accomplishments and to a great life in general is a fundamental belief that we can.

The truly amazing part is that we control this. Granted, some of us need to work at a positive disposition more than others, but just like brushing our teeth before bed, positive thinking is a habit that we can fine tune and master; it just might take a little practice.

A Mantra is that practice. It is a simple clear statement that we can repeat to ourselves, especially in those moments of struggle. It gives us immediate strength to embrace challenges and triumph. Over time, repetition literally paves neural grooves in our brains, kind of like brainwashing our subconscious. It continuously shapes us into the people we want to be, living the life we want. So, repeating something like “I am strong and sexy” may very well be your biggest weapon. Just remember, attitude is everything.
