Summer break has arrived, potentially leaving teens with a lot of time on their hands until school resumes in the fall.

It turns out they can replace the books with exercise bikes -- and at no cost.

Planet Fitness locations nationwide, including in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, are offering free summer memberships for students between 14 and 19 years old. The program, called High School Summer Pass '24, runs through August 31.

"Since the High School Summer Pass program began, Planet Fitness has invested more than $200 million in waived membership dues to promote youth health and wellness and improve the physical and mental health of millions of teens," the fitness chain said.

Interested teens can register on the Planet Fitness website or in person at the location of their choice, then will have to create accounts on the free Planet Fitness app before the workouts begin. Teens younger than 18 will need to sign up with parents or guardians. Parents can start their own fitness journeys with free day passes.

It also offers classes. Clubs around the SouthCoast include Fall River, Somerset, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Wareham, Taunton and Middleboro.
