Gazelle Gains Newfound Respect for Construction
What started as demolition is now becoming a dream come true. The wife and I are getting ready to move to Dartmouth, but there's still much work to be done.
After four intense days of hammering, hauling, sawing, lifting, climbing, and praying the rain would hold off just long enough, Phase 2 of our house project is officially complete. Phase 1, the demolition, was a beast of its own, but that's a different story for a different day.
What started as a dream to build a principle bedroom for the wife and I and a nursery for our baby boy quickly turned into an experience that opened my eyes in ways I never expected. It’s one thing to watch construction happen from a distance. It’s another thing entirely to strap on a pair of work boots, pick up a hammer and live it.
Sunup to sundown.
The Physical and Mental Challenge
The physical toll was immediate.
Muscles I didn’t even know existed were screaming by Day 2. My hands, once used for DJing and basketball, were soon wrapped around lumber and weathered tools. Gloves that started the week clean and intact are now torn and stained, worn out like badges of honor.

The mental battle was real, too. From balancing on roof-length ladders in the wind and rain to scrambling to board up open walls before storms rolled in, and fighting through sheer exhaustion to finish what we started. Every task, no matter how small, took teamwork, precision and grit.
A Newfound Appreciation
But here’s the thing: I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
Because what I walked away with is something deeper than just sore muscles and a stronger roof.
I walked away with a whole new appreciation for the men and women in construction, the ones who do this day in and day out. The ones who build the homes we live in, the schools our kids attend, the places we work and gather and create memories. It’s a craft. It’s an art. And it’s often a labor of love that doesn’t get nearly enough credit.
There’s a quiet pride that comes from stepping back at the end of a long day and seeing the progress. Nail by nail, board by board, dream by dream; it comes together because of hard work. Real work.
Gratitude Beyond Words
I owe a huge thank you to everyone who helped along the way — my father-in-law, my dad, Andy, Ronnie, Teddy, Rick and everyone else who lent a hand or brought a meal to keep us going. Most importantly to my wife, who kept my fire burning when I was winded and worn.
Phase 2 is complete. The bones of our home are strong. Our dream is becoming real.
And my respect for the people who do this for a living? Rock solid.
