Route 18 And 195 Construction Ramping Up Again In New Bedford
Construction Activity Picking Back Up
It has been more than six months since construction on the Route 18 on and off ramps from 195 began to be torn down. If we are being honest, the traffic Armageddon has not been as bad as many initially feared. In fact, the construction on 195 in New Bedford has been more of a moderate inconvenience than a major disruption, with little visible activity on the highway in recent weeks.
What Is Happening Now
It appears the next phase of the project is now underway. Over the next few weeks, construction activity will ramp back up along both 195 and the Route 18 corridor as MassDOT continues work on the long term infrastructure project.
What Work Is Being Done
Now through May 3, crews will focus on setting up work zones and beginning early stage construction. Along 195, that includes nightly traffic setups, installation of signage, demolition work, temporary striping, and single lane closures.
On surrounding local roads, work will include utility upgrades, earthmoving, structural support installation, and concrete construction for footings and piers.
How Traffic Will Be Impacted
According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the project will continue to have a significant impact on traffic patterns. The 195 westbound Exit 26 to Route 18 southbound and the Route 18 on ramp to 195 westbound will remain closed and are expected to stay closed until the summer of 2027.
What Roads Will See Detours
Detours are in place, especially for trucks, while passenger vehicles can still navigate through local streets. Additional short term closures and detours will affect roads like Cedar Grove Street, Purchase Street, North Front Street, and parts of Route 18 at various times, particularly during overnight hours and daytime work windows.
Some closures will impact both drivers and pedestrians.
