In a world where many interactions feel fleeting and impersonal, there are still a few who go above and beyond to make a difference in their community.

For New Bedford residents along Adam Baptista Jr.'s USPS route, he's much more than just a mail carrier. Baptista, who has been working for the United States Postal Service since January 2015, has made it his mission to ensure that each delivery comes with an extra dose of care.

Recently, an Amazon delivery to my home didn’t go as planned. Despite clear instructions to leave the package in the backyard, the delivery driver left it on the front porch, risking theft. Fortunately, Baptista stepped in to save the day. Noticing the vulnerable package, he took it upon himself to move it to the backyard, where it would be safer. He even left a message on my Ring doorbell to let my wife and I know that he took care of it for us. It’s small acts of kindness like this that set Baptista apart.

When asked what he loves most about his job, Baptista shared, "Honestly, I love the customers. I’ve watched couples get together, then get married, and have kids. It’s wild to think it, but as a mailman, I’ve become a family member to some families. Some of my customers are so old that I’m the only person they see all day. I love giving them at least one of my 10-minute breaks to catch up and see how they’ve been."

His connections with the people along his route have grown over the years. Whether it's chatting with an elderly resident who might otherwise spend the day alone or going the extra mile during harsh New England winters, Baptista is more than just a familiar face—he’s a trusted friend. "Most of my customers take real good care of me during all the seasons," he added, reflecting on the relationships he’s built.

Adam Baptista Jr. is a shining example of how even the smallest actions can have a huge impact. As the community he serves can attest, it’s people like him who restore faith in the little things that make life just a bit brighter.
