A School Built On Opportunity

This week’s Southcoast Health Community Spotlight shines on Nativity Prep in New Bedford, a unique school dedicated to helping young boys reach their full potential.

In a time when some feel boys are being overlooked, New Bedford's Nativity Prep puts them in the forefront not only to teach them academics, but to also mentor their growth into good men.

Head of School, Christian Garris, grew up in New Bedford himself. Garris says Nativity Prep serves students in grades five through eight from low income backgrounds, offering them a tuition free private school education.

A Different Kind Of Learning Environment

Nativity Prep is intentionally small, with about 55 students and class sizes of around 16 to 17 boys. That smaller setting allows teachers to give more individualized attention to students who might otherwise get lost in larger classrooms.

“We’re looking for kids who have potential,” Garris said. “Not necessarily the perfect student, but someone who will come in and give 100 percent effort.”

The school also emphasizes family involvement, encouraging parents to stay engaged through events, meetings, and ongoing communication.

More Than Just Academics

While building a strong academic foundation is important, Nativity Prep also focuses on character development. Through mentorship and strong values, Garris says the goal is to help students grow into confident young men who can make positive decisions.

With a teaching staff made up largely of male role models, the school provides guidance and structure that many students benefit from.

A Place For Kids Who Need It Most

Garris says Nativity Prep is a great fit for boys who may be “sliding under the radar” in traditional school settings. The program is designed to help unlock that untapped potential and give students the tools they need to succeed in high school and beyond.

Community Support Matters

Nativity Prep relies heavily on community support to continue its mission. A major fundraiser is set for June 4 at Cisco Brewers in New Bedford, bringing together students, families, and supporters for an evening focused on giving back.
