Father-to-Be Sympathy Weight Becomes New Reality

I’ll start off by saying that sympathy weight is a reality I wasn’t quite prepared for.

In case you missed it or have been living under a rock, my wife and I are expecting our first child in May, a baby boy we can’t wait to meet.

It’s been almost 27 weeks since we started this journey called pregnancy, and although there’s no excuse for me, I’ve unknowingly packed on the pounds. Today was the first time I weighed in since finding out I was entering fatherhood, and the results were mildly alarming.

I had gained 30 pounds.

Yes, you read that correctly: 30 freakin’ pounds – and it’s no one’s fault but my own.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve worked out constantly and vigorously since noticing the weight gain, but everyone knows it’s all about what happens in the kitchen. My diet diminished, and I was consuming a rather large portion size, larger than I care to admit.

Life’s a rollercoaster.

Whether emotionally, or in this case physically, it takes a toll on everyday mental health. I know damn well what I need to do: keep the snacks at bay and stick to proper portions. Just because it says “all-you-can-eat” doesn’t mean I need to take that as a personal challenge.

I’m not asking for pity. Far from it, especially since my wife has it so much worse (in the most beautifully poetic way). In other words, I know my lane, and I’m staying in it. I’m just pointing out that I was oblivious to just how comfortable I had become with some pretty awful eating habits.

In a nutshell, if there’s anyone out there feeling the weight gain blues, don’t worry, you’re not alone.
