The ‘Mass Attack Roller Derby’ Girls Teach Gazelle How To Play

If there is one thing I learned yesterday, it is to not underestimate the power of chicks on roller skates.

I've never been on roller skates, just roller blades and not since I was eleven.  Yesterday I had the opportunity to join the Mass Attack Roller Derby Team for their practice at Carousel Skate and it was lot harder than I imagined.

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members that are skating in the same direction around a track. The game consists of a series of short match ups (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team while the team attempts to hinder the opposing jammer.

I thought it was going to be fun and games but I thought wrong. Those girls were tough and they know how to hit. Even though I was in a lot of pain by the end of the night it was fun to learn the ropes of Roller Derby.
