The Beloved Day of Portugal in New Bedford Returns After Two-Year Hiatus

After a two-year hiatus, the Portuguese people of the SouthCoast will finally get to celebrate their heritage once again.

The Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, as it's officially called, is celebrating its  25th year June 3-5 with a new venue but the same tradition.

The festivities will take place at the Senhor Da Pedra feast grounds, 81 Tinkham St., New Bedford, with Azorean and local artisans as well as local folkloric groups, bands, and traditional Portuguese foods.

In other words, make sure you come hungry and bring your dancing shoes.

On Friday, June 10, the official Day of Portugal, the flag in front of City Hall will be raised at 6:30 p.m. The program includes students from the Discovery Language Academy and the children’s folkloric group, who will perform in front of City Hall and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. A reception will follow with traditional Portuguese food and drinks.

Guests also will be able to experience the current exhibit at the Whaling Museum, "The Azorean Spirit: The Art of Domingos Rebelo."

The golf tournament, which is the Day of Portugal committee's biggest fundraiser, will return at a later date. A large portion of the funds will go toward scholarships for local students.
