When you're having your first child, you need a lot of stuff. But what things are registry must haves and what things can you skip when starting out?

My husband and I are venturing out soon to start registering for baby things. Obviously getting a crib, a changing table, a car seat and those major things are a must, but what about the little things? The extras that you may or may not really need, but can make things easier. Which of these are must buys and which can you skip?

Plenty of mommy blog site have weighed in on this one and here are some of the top picks from some women who have been there and done that.

    A white noise machine

Exactly like the one that may help you fall asleep at night, the white noise machine features nature sounds like ocean waves or a heartbeat that can be very soothing to your baby. Many mothers swear by them to keep constant background sounds happening while their baby is sleeping.

From bassinet to playpen, the pack n play can do it all. A great place for baby to sleep while visiting relatives or play while you're getting stuff done around the house, it folds up, travels pretty easily and has many uses. A must-have according to many moms.

A rain cover for the car seat

I honestly never would have thought of this one without looking at a few mommy sites first. But having a protective plastic cover for over the car seat/stroller made the must-have lists. Makes sense especially here in New England with all the snow, sleet and rain we get throughout the year. Why have all of that hit your poor baby in the face!
