First impressions are always key when interviewing for a job, so here's how to perfect it by avoiding these words.

Ever heard of the term "less is more"? It's absolutely true! Thinking before speaking helps 100% of the time so chose your words wisely when speaking in front of your potential employer/boss.

According to Business Insider, presence, confidence and verbal usage are all very important things to practice and remember when it comes to applying for any job, no matter what you're trying to secure. They mention 29 words that should be avoided at all times, but here are the top 7 words from the group:

  • 1

    Sorry

Be confident in yourself, be confident in your words. Apologizing too much makes you appear to be weak or self-conscience. At this point in time during an interview, there should be nothing to be apologetic for so avoid making excuses for yourself, followed by "Sorry". Like Justin Beiber sang- "Is it too late now to say sorry?"... Yes, yes it is.

    Nervous

Most of the time, the first sentence someone who is nervous going into a job interview will say is... "Sorry, I'm really nervous right now". Tip of the Day: Even if you are, DON'T ADMIT IT! Companies want someone who is confident and mentally strong. They can't be hiring someone who can't take action if a decision needs to be made in an instant. Admitting your nervous right off the bat may significantly lower your chances of getting the job.

    Vacation or PTO

Availability is everything in any job that you'll apply for. These bosses are all looking for the same thing and that is commitment. They are looking for someone who can be both reliable and available at any point in time. Chances are, if you're dedicate to the position offered then you'll do just fine getting the job. Worry about vacations and Personal time off afterwards or at least once you've become comfortable within the company and have proven your commitment.

    Pregnant or Sick

This is not a bash whatsoever towards any pregnant woman or people who are sick, it's simply the truth. If you tell the person who is interviewing you that you are expecting a child, then it might turn off the company hirer. They already know that you're going to need some time off and for the most part paid. Again, there is nothing wrong with that, but if you're in a room full of people who are also trying to land the same job you are going for, then perhaps wait to tell the good news of your expecting child until after you're hired. The same goes for being sick... DO your best to simply get through the interview without sneezing in the person's face who is about to make a very important decision.

    Um, So and Like

Think first, talk slow (but not too slow) and use your words. 'Um', 'so' and 'like' tend to become repetitive and can sometimes come across as annoying. It's a bad habit that most people don't even realize they have. The more fluent and flowing your conversation is with someone, the better the chance of landing a job when speaking in front of a hirer.

    Perks or Benefits

Never get too far ahead of yourself. Remember that you're there for one sole reason and that is to become employed to support yourself or others. Worry about the perks and benefits afterwards. Perhaps do a little research first, most businesses will disclose this information on their website or simply ask around in case someone you or someone else knows a person who has been previously employed for the job your interviewing for.

    Any Swear

Be respectful and stay classy, most swears can be replaced with intellect and substituted with impressive alternate adjectives. Swearing in general is Ugly anyways, so avoid at all costs... you never know who's listening.
