Tiverton Man Sentenced for Drugged Driving and Manslaughter

FALL RIVER (WBSM) — A Tiverton, Rhode Island man who killed a Lakeville man while driving high on fentanyl and cocaine was sentenced to serve no less than five years in state prison.

On June 8, 2021, Alexander Farias, 30, was driving on Route 24 southbound in Fall River while high on fentanyl and cocaine. Frias started drifting his car, which then traveled across the left lane and into the grass median. During that time, his vehicle began spinning.

As it was spinning, Frias' vehicle began to roll into the northbound lane before colliding with the victim, causing fatal injuries.

The victim, James Dumas Jr.,35, was an electrician driving home from work.

Frias was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where his blood was drawn for medical purposes. Blood work revealed that his body contained fentanyl and cocaine in its system.

Police also obtained a search warrant for a safe found in Frias' truck. Inside, they discovered fentanyl, alprazolam, psilocybin and a large-capacity firearm magazine.

Farias pleaded guilty to indictments charging him with manslaughter while operating under the influence, possession of Class A, C and E drugs, and unlawful possession of a large capacity firearm feeding device.
