Tiverton’s Matt Carreiro Driving Purpose Behind Golf Tournament
SouthCoast golfers are coming together on the course this June for a cause that’s much bigger than birdies and bragging rights.
The inaugural “Matthew’s Comeback Classic” will honor the fighting spirit of Tiverton’s Matt Carreiro, a lifelong resident known as someone who never stopped pushing forward, even after suffering a devastating spinal cord injury last year.
According to organizers, the accident left Carreiro paralyzed from the neck down. What followed was a long and emotional road filled with rehabilitation, determination and support from the local community that rallied around him every step of the way.
Now, that same support system is turning heartbreak into purpose.
The scramble-format golf tournament is set for Friday, June 19 at Swansea Country Club with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. This event was created by Matt’s close friend Brian Miranda to continue supporting the recovery journey and mission Matt believes in so deeply.

Golfing for a Greater Purpose
Carreiro had begun intensive rehabilitation treatment through Journey Forward, a nonprofit organization specializing in spinal cord injury recovery. Friends say every golfer who signs up for the tournament helps provide another rehabilitation session for someone facing similar life-changing challenges.

Despite the unimaginable obstacles placed in front of him, those closest to Carreiro say his spirit remained incredibly strong. His hope was not only to continue healing himself, but eventually help others facing spinal cord injuries by paying forward the kindness he received.
