In a disappointing turn of events for foodies in New Bedford, the beloved Freestone’s City Grill has closed its doors for good.

Despite efforts to revive the business, including a new sign and reduced hours, the ownership announced on Sunday, June 30, that they had made the difficult decision to close the beloved downtown staple. The business was purchased in December 2022 to keep the flame burning, but several factors led to the closure.

The challenges faced by Freestone’s City Grill included increased food costs, difficulties in sourcing quality products, limited parking and the restaurant's location on William Street. Summer, typically slow for Freestone's, proved particularly challenging.

Known for its popular Syrian Nachos, creative cocktails, and comforting menu, Freestone's was a cozy establishment where everyone knew everyone, going back to the 1970s.

Lunch was once a hot commodity at the restaurant, including after its reopening in 2022. However, increased parking meter costs and limited space had negative effects.

The current owners have decided to list the building and the business soon. They said staff was notified of the move ahead of time.

For those with gift cards, hold onto them for now. Look out for announcements on the Freestone's Facebook page regarding how you can redeem them. If you have any questions about purchasing the business and the building, you can message owners directly.

Freestone's is the second downtown restaurant to make a "for sale" announcement recently. The other is blocks away on Purchase Street.
