When Governor Baker walked us through the phases of reopening businesses here in Massachusetts earlier today, I couldn't believe that our fitness gyms were next to last and slated for Phase 3.

It's not that I don't miss getting a manicure or a pedicure, because I do. But honestly, what I miss most of all are my workouts at the gym. Making do with online video Zoom classes has been ok and helped me get through but there's nothing like going to the actual gym and working out with my trainers and the other gym members.

I knew that the gyms would most likely not be part of the first phase of re-opening but I did not think they'd be last – or second-to-last if you count Phase 4.

If you think about the difference between going to the gym for a one-hour workout and then going to a nail spa to get a manicure and pedicure, which do you feel puts you in closer contact with another person?

My answer to that question would be the nail spa. Not only are you putting yourself in closer contact but you are also allowing a technician to physically touch your skin. This type of physical contact would not happen if you were going to the gym to take a class, or to use the treadmill, rower, or elliptical. It also wouldn't happen in the weight training section, either.

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see all small businesses resume ASAP and I will be very happy when I can go get my nails done sometime soon.

But who's with me? Man, I miss the gym. 😩
