‘I Was Terrified': You Never Forget Your First Dirty Diaper
Fair warning: This article may elicit a "who cares," but it's a moment that happened in my life that I'd like to share with the world.
I recently became an uncle (thanks to my brother and sister-in-law) and was blessed with the most beautiful little niece. I've covered her face in the photo above to protect my family's privacy. That being said, I, Gazelle, have changed my very first diaper.
Well, my brother assisted, but I did most of the work.
As simple as a diaper change can be, I was terrified. She was so tiny in my giant gorilla hands that I was nervous about hurting her or making her uncomfortable. Thankfully, my brother showed me how to carefully lift her legs to remove the diaper, followed by the proper wiping technique, reapplying the clean diaper and then getting her dressed again.
Luckily, it wasn't anything too messy.
There's a point to all this besides just changing a diaper. I get it, big deal, right? For me, it was momentous and something I'll never forget. At that very moment, she was so young and tiny, but I know that I'll blink and she'll be all grown up.
My goddaughter, my niece.
So, for anyone waiting for the right moment to change a diaper for the first time, don't forget to take it all in when it happens. Cherish the moment and remember it. There's no set age or perfect time to learn, but once you do, it's a whole new world.
Absorb those special moments and learn to appreciate the little things that life throws your way.
Even if it is a dirty diaper.
