My Best Man ‘Speech’ for My Younger Brother [VIDEO]
On May 22, 2021, my younger brother married his best friend.
I was given the responsibility of being his best man and it was a job I gladly took on. From the day he proposed to his now wife, Krystal, to the final song at his wedding, it all seems too perfect.
Was it a lot of work? Of course it was; I'm a perfectionist who wants nothing but the best for my younger brother. We might not have been as close as I wish we were growing up, but now that we're grown, I'm proud to call him my best friend.
Unlike a traditional best man speech, I had to take it up a notch and create more of a best man "song." This was my third time being asked to be someone's best man and the third song I've written. Each song was a parody from a popular chart-topping hit that most people are familiar with. For example:
Best Man Wedding #1: "Married Guy," a play on Don McLean's "American Pie"
Best Man Wedding #2: "The Love of His Life," a play on Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)"
Best Man Wedding #3 (My Brother): "Married Man," a play on Billy Joel's "Piano Man"
A very long story short, it was an incredibly beautiful wedding day and to see my brother and his wife happy is what brings joy to my life. This is my best man speech to my brother:
"Married Man"
(Adapted from Billy Joel's "Piano Man"by Gazelle)
It’s 6 o’ clock on a Saturday
Our family and friends shuffle in
There’s a beautiful couple right in front of me
Who’s waiting for me to begin.
I’ll tell you a tale of my brother
Who was always a bit of a geek
He worked on computers, I ate out at Hooters
At least a few times every week.
And the two of us, we are different
I’m brawny, while he is the brains
I would rollerblade every Saturday
While Mom cheered on his soccer games
Now Taylor, he loves eating leftovers
And metal detecting with Dad
We loved Butler’s Donuts and had matching bowl cuts
What an interesting life that we had.
[EVERYONE] So, let’s make a toast for the married man
Let’s make a toast for his wife
We are gathered together, there’s nothing that’s better
Than to honor their marriage tonight
Oh, La, La, La, Diddy Da
La, La, Diddy, Da, Da-Dum
When Mom signed us both up for instruments
She made herself perfectly clear
I was to play the saxophone while he played his trombone
That he gave up after only one year
Now my friends they gave him a nickname
That he earned at an old house party
“I’m not drinking” he said, And had Orange Juice instead
That’s why we called him Vitamin C
His 21st birthday at Wonder bowl
My friends took him out for the night
Our hangovers hurt, we had matching t-shirts
But we all had a really fun time.
[EVERYONE] So, let’s make a toast for the married man
Let’s make a toast for his wife
We are gathered together, there’s nothing that’s better
Than to honor their marriage tonight
Oh, La, La, La, Diddy Da
La, La, Diddy, Da, Da-Dum
Now the day has arrived for a marriage
That has bonded two people for life
Taylor dropped to one knee, then he asked me to be
His best man on this beautiful night
[EVERYONE] So… let’s sing him a song he’s a married man
Let’s sing him a song tonight,
We are gathered together, there’s nothing that’s better
Than to see him happy with his wife
I’ll sing him a song as his best man
There’s nowhere else I’d rather be,
Than right here by his side, with his beautiful Bride
In the presence of good company.
Oh, La, La, La, Diddy Da
La, La, Diddy, Da, Da-Dum
As I finish this song that I sing to you
There’s just one thing I have to say
So I’ll sing it out loud, I’ve never been more proud
Than to celebrate his special day.
[EVERYONE] So, let’s make a toast for the married man
Let’s make a toast for his wife
We are gathered together, there’s nothing that’s better
Than to honor their marriage tonight.
