Did You Know Ed Sheeran Once Completed A New England Ice Cream Challenge?
This past weekend Ed Sheeran played as his own opening act after singer Khalid got in a car accident before the show. He remarked about how fun it is to just play as the opener, something he hasn't had the chance to do in a long while.
Back in 2013, Ed was touring as the opening act on Taylor Swift's Red tour. That was also the year Taylor bought Holiday House in Westerly, so when her tour rolled into Gillette at the end of July, she spent a few nights at her new place in Rhode Island.
Apparently, she invited Sheeran to do the same.
While staying in the beachfront town before their back-to-back shows at Gillette, the two friends sparked dating rumors by going paddleboarding together and being seen out for ice cream.
Yet their ice cream excursion was anything but romantic.
The pair went with Sheeran's brother to Mel's Downtown Creamery, just over the Westerly border in Pawcatuck, Connecticut.
Mel's happens to be home of the Big Kahuna Challenge.
Those brave enough to take it on must eat eight scoops of ice cream with seven toppings, banana slices, whipped cream and four cherries all on top of a large fudgy brownie. It's served in a salad bowl and you only have 17 minutes to eat everything.
Sheeran managed to do it.
The pop star clearly struggled with the massive sundae and a few times looks like he might be sick, and yet he powered through.

Staff at Mel's said that was all Sheeran wanted when he took on the challenge. Now 10 years after his super sundae eating, Sheeran still sits on Mel's wall as probably their most famous ice cream challenger to date.
