In the many ways that the American flag could possibly be desecrated, would you consider a picture of a newborn baby swaddled in the red, white and blue cloth to make the list?

Vanessa Hicks is a Navy veteran and the photographer of the picture above. A military man in uniform held his newborn wrapped in Old Glory during a photo shoot. Hicks is also married to an active-duty Navy serviceman. She meant to honor her client's wishes for incorporating their service in the portraits.

"This is what he was fighting for, his son wrapped in an American flag," Hicks told ABC News. Not everyone agrees with the image on her web page, one unknown Facebook user went as far as to say it was "disrespectful, rude, tacky, disgusting, and against the U.S. Flag Code."

Hicks has had so much backlash online, that "she stayed up until 4 a.m. recently to take down comments from her business and company page, even on shoots that had nothing to do with the flag."

The photo is now going viral and Hicks has found many people who agree with her, that the picture is not offensive, but patriotic. Reflecting on her own military experience, Hicks told ABC News, "I have seen firsthand what is desecration of the flag. At the end of the day I didn't do anything that disrespected this flag."

Word of the photo spread quickly and now Hicks has received requests for photo shoots left and right."She said she plans to give 15 percent of all profits related to those shoots to the USO."

I am glad to hear her business is doing well. She is a Navy veteran who served this country and is trying to make an honest living by preserving memories for other families. There is no reason to threaten her life or make her feel un-American. I am aware that they technically shouldn't have used the flag as a "garment," but I'm sure there are worse ways to desecrate such an important symbol. The fact that this precious child is swaddled in the American flag, I consider it a symbol for one of the reasons our service men and women fight so hard to protect the good old USA; the innocent.
