Most of the focus for Black Friday and Cyber Monday seem to highlight the big box stores and major chain retailers, as well as e-commerce stores.   But Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize the small, local business.

This new shopping holiday began in 2010, and was actually created by American Express as an advertising campaign.  It was promoted on radio, TV and via Facebook.

But AMEX aside, it is a campaign that works well for many of those "Mom & Pop" shops that seem to be all but forgotten during the holiday shopping frenzy.  Many of those businesses are now promoting special sales to take advantage of the Saturday after Thanksgiving and well as the weeks following.

So, whether you're using cash, debit or credit card, keep in mind the small business of America.   Sometimes the gifts are more unique, and over half of the money spent in those establishments stays in the local community.
