SouthCoast’s Fastest Growing Town
United Van Lines is a company that rents moving vans. As you can imagine, their vans end up in all corners of the United States. Interestingly enough, because of the nature of their business, United Van Lines probably knows the moving trends of Americans before almost anyone else. They can recognize trends of people moving in and out of states likely before the government can. In the latest numbers, United Van Lines told us that there are more people fleeing Massachusetts than moving into the state. The United Van Lines data states that 56% of the van rentals that cross state lines are outgoing. Only 46% of interstate moves show people moving to Massachusetts. More people are looking to move out of the Bay State than move here.
With that in mind, the census data supports those numbers. When looking at the Census data from cities and towns, most of them are not growing. In fact, it's a win for a Massachusetts town to just maintain their population. Treading water is a win.

Whether you support Massachusetts Governor Healey's position on housing migrants, these numbers are likely to change at the end of this year with towns all over the Commonwealth bringing in thousands of migrants.
Putting the migrant issue to the side for the moment, most cities and towns here on the SouthCoast are trending similarly to the state numbers, showing no growth whatsoever.
We took the numbers from the 2020 census and compared them to the population numbers at the end of 2023. One town did show some fairly significant growth, however. Here are how the SouthCoast population numbers have shaken out over the past several years.
