According to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter, the Pats and Niners have linked up on a deal to send the backup QB to San Fran, in exchange for a 2018 second round draft pick.

The move, which really wasn't expected, is a bit of a head scratcher, as the team reportedly shot down multiple offers for Garoppolo this offseason. Most, if not all, of those offers would have reportedly yielded the Pats a first round pick as well as other assets.

With Tom Brady playing so incredibly well at the spry age of 40 years old, the Pats obviously deemed that Garoppolo was expendable. It is a bit shocking that they gave him up for less than a first, however.

Maybe those summer and draft day reports of first round picks being flaunted for the Eastern Illinois talent were actually wrong. Maybe this is more of the mad scientist scheme the Bill Belichick has pulled off for almost two full decades now. Only time will tell.

The only two sure things right now are that the Pats will need to add a backup quarterback in the coming days, to take a beating in practice, and Tom Brady is most definitely the future in New England.
