Allegations were spread yesterday from the website Jezebel, that Kira Kazantsev, who was recently crowned Miss America, was thrown out of her sorority for hazing new members.

I’m incredibly hurt that someone has said these things.

Miss America went on ABCNews, denying the claims that were being said about her hazing new recruitment for her sorority, Alpha Phi. “I’m incredibly hurt that someone has said these things,” said Kazantsev, former member of Alpha Phi at Hofstra University. She further stated that yes, she had been involved with hazing through her time at the organization but never to the amount that was being said online.

Kazantsev was kicked out of her sorority but not for harsh hazing, instead she claimed it was for a joke she wrote in an email that was deeply misconstrued. When asked if she would say what the joke was about she replied with, “I was asked by a New Member Educator when I was a senior to reach out to the alumni base to have an event of sorts. In the email I basically made a joke and that was taken out of context and forwarded to the national office".

Kazantsev was also hazed as a first year student in the sorority and she claimed she was extremely impressionable at the time in her life. She thought hazing was a normal part of Greek life and didn't realize how wrong it was until she was two years out of the sorority.

Kira Kazantsev was a triple major at Hofstra University, an honor student and spent a lot of time involved in her community. She ended her interview saying, “I’m going to take this negative and turn it into a positive.”
