Mattapoisett and Fairhaven Mystery Signs Solved
If you're like me, you've seen these new, super creepy signs popping up all over Mattapoisett and Fairhaven. The signs first appeared about a week or so ago. Normally, new signs in Mattapoisett and Fairhaven don't tend to be the talk of the town. When they are shrouded like an Azkaban Dementor from Harry Potter, however, people tend to wonder what the heck is going on.
We spoke to newly-elected Highway Surveyor Garrett Bauer. He told us that the signs are going to direct people around a detour that will be coming soon to a bridge on Acushnet Road in Mattapoisett.
How Long Will the Bridge Construction Take?
A similar project was done on a culvert on Acushnet Road in the Tinkham Pond area several years ago. The construction caused headaches for people commuting from the backroads of Mattapoisett, Acushnet and Rochester trying to reach Fairhaven. That detour lasted for more than a year. Thankfully, Bauer said this project won't take nearly as long.
"The bridge is old and it needs replacing. In this case, we're being proactive about it," he said. "The Tinkham Pond bridge was closed for a year because MassDOT came down and labeled it as unsafe. That's why it took a year to complete that construction."
So this will be a shorter duration project?
"Thirty days," Bauer said. "It's got to be done before the schools reopen because the cost for the school buses to get detoured during the school season was ridiculous. We've got to get in and get this thing done. Thirty days."
When Will the Bridge Construction Begin?
Construction won't begin until July 13, but signs were placed out in the field this early because that is how the schedule was laid out with the contractor.
Bauer admitted the signs were mysterious and spooky looking. "Yeah, I know it," he laughed. "I agree."
