Gnome Surf’s Little Legends Wave Fest Takes Over Horseneck Beach in Westport
Gnome Surf has become a thriving light of positivity that's growing brighter by the day.
This all-inclusive/all-abilities surfing organization prides itself on the countless smiles surfers bring back to shore.
Little did owner Chris Antao realize when he started the program just how impactful he and his team would be in the community not only to the kids but to parents as well.
Patience and perseverance are key.
On Sunday, Sept. 10, 1 to 5 p.m., get ready for a brand-new event called Little Legends Wave Fest, an all-abilities surf competition at Horseneck Beach in Westport. The first order of business will be a beach clean-up to support the partnership with DCR starting at 11 while the rest of the group sets up.
"We are still looking for some community leaders as judges, community sponsorships and to get the word out," Gnome Surf Co-Program Director Jennifer Potter said. "This year we will have up to 75 athletes and we believe that all kids, regardless of abilities, should be able to compete for the title of Gnome Champion."
Little Legends Wave Fest is the first inclusive surf competition of its kind and will be split into three divisions divided by age (6 and under, 10 and under, and 16 and under):
- Tandem - athlete and instructor.
- Team-assisted - Instructor will assist athlete with positioning, wave choice and push into the wave, but athlete will surf the wave on their own.
- Freestyle - Solo surfing.
Each athlete will have an allotted time to display their surf skills, bravery, style and the all-important stoke.
All athletes will receive a "Certificate of Awesome," an Official Gnome T-shirt, and a limited-edition Little Legends sticker.
In this event, nine champions will be crowned and each winner will be chosen from the division broken down by age group. For more information, be sure to check the event out online at www.gnomesurf.com as well as Gnome's social media pages.
Surfs up, and best of luck to all competing this weekend.
