The food pantry at St. Anthony of Padua Church was broken into and robbed over the weekend, but the public has responded with a great outpouring of generosity.   20 turkeys and 150 pounds of cheese meant for Thanksgiving meals for the needy were taken on Saturday.

As of now, the Acushnet Avenue church has received more than 30 turkeys, several bags of food, and more than $1,000.   When thieves broke into the refrigeration unit behind the church, they also damaged the door.   The church plans to construct a fence around the unit.

New Bedford police continue to search for suspects.
