Fairhaven’s Forgotten Breakfast Drive-Through Collecting Dust and Looking Lonely
It's funny the things you find when you're paying attention.
A few buddies and I met up for lunch in Fairhaven recently. We stopped by Ice House, eager to try a new chopped cheese sandwich on the specials board. As I parked, something caught my eye that I've never noticed before.
It was an old drive-through speaker box and menu board that seemed out of place.
If you're familiar with Fairhaven Gas on Route 6, you might remember when it was called Fairhaven Gas: Fuel & Coffee Stop. As I recall, the word "stop" was in all caps and below it read, "We Carry Ma's Donuts." These days Ma's is known as Grandma's Donuts, thanks to a petty Rhode Island donut shop with a similar name. Fairhaven Gas once carried the donuts to go along with other baked breakfast goods and coffee.
Sadly, now it's just Fairhaven Gas. No coffee and donuts in sight.
The former drive-through lane is now where you can go for your inspection sticker or to have your car worked on in a double-vehicle garage. Although they don't carry "Ma's" anymore or even coffee, this forgotten sign has stood the test of time.
Now it looks lonesome behind the gas station, watching the cars pull in and out of the Ice House parking lot.
It's funny to think that there was once a time when you could get a large coffee for only $1.75 without worrying about inflation or counting change in the ashtray.
Nowadays, you're lucky to get a small coffee for that price alone.
