Dartmouth’s Hawthorne Country Club Destroyed By Fire

DARTMOUTH (WBSM) — A little more than a week after being sold, the vacant building that once housed the Hawthorne Country Club on Tucker Road in Dartmouth was destroyed in a fire Sunday afternoon.

According to Dartmouth District 2 Fire Chief Erick Turcotte, the fire call came in at around 1:30 p.m. and the blaze took about two hours to extinguish.

“We kept it to a working fire assignment with the assistance of Dartmouth District 1 and Dartmouth District 3,” Turcotte said.

He said there were no injuries but that the building, which has been vacant for years, was a complete loss.

The 56-acre property included a clubhouse and banquet facility in addition to what was once a nine-hole golf course, which ceased operations at the end of 2015.

The property was just sold for $3 million a little over a week ago to national builder Toll Brothers, with plans to develop a senior condominium complex that was expected to have about 105 units spread across the property. The plan was for the former clubhouse and banquet facility to be knocked down.

The fire remains under investigation by the Dartmouth Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.
