Crews are working to clean up what is being called a "significant" fuel spill in the harbor near Pier 3 in New Bedford.   The diesel fuel spill was first spotted at about 7:30 this morning, and had already spread to the north and south of the bridge.

The Deputy Fire Chief of new Bedford says the spill covers a large area of the harbor.  It most likely happened overnight and the source of the spill has not yet been determined.

The NBFD has set out an absorbent boom designed to clear the fuel from the water.  The Coast Guard and the Department of Environmental Protection are also on the scene.
