There has been a major debate on whether Iggy Azalea should have been eligible for an award at the Billboard Music Awards earlier this month.

The Australian rapper and singer was awarded Top Rap Song for her song “Fancy” featuring English singer Charli XCX at the Billboard Music Awards. Azalea also won the awards of Top Rap Artist and Top Streaming Artist. She was up against artists such as, Drake, J. Cole, and Nicki Minaj for Top Rap Artist. For Top Streaming Artist, Azalea was up against Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Meghan Trainor.

However, Buzz Feed News states that a petition has been started because many people thought it was unfair for Azalea to win the award for Top Rap Song.

Those who signed the petition believe that “Fancy” should have never received a nomination because it was released a month before the eligibility starting date of March 10, 2014. Over 15,000 people have signed the petition and it reached over 5000 signatures in a 24 hour span.

According to the Billboard Music Awards website, finalists are based on “key fan interactions with music” rather than the date the song was released.
