We're experiencing a major heatwave, with temperatures well into the high 80s, sometimes hitting 90. Factor in that heat index and situations can become dangerous. I was at the beach for a few hours on Sunday afternoon and decided to call it a day when I started feeling off. I knew I had to get out of the sun and make my way into an air-conditioned space as soon as possible. For some, that luxury isn't always a possibility.

The YMCA is here to help those who may not otherwise have a safe space to beat the heat during the hottest time of the day. From Tuesday, July 21 to Friday, July 24, the Y is offering its locations to area residents as a cooling station. Stop by any of these locations between 12:15 and 1:45 pm to cool down or charge your phone:

  • Gleason Family YMCA in Wareham
  • New Bedford YMCA
  • Fall River YMCA
  • Stoico/FIRSTFED YMCA in Swansea

"Allowing up to six people in at a time with tables set up in the lobby with a chair to properly social distance. Due to capacity restrictions, we ask that you please call ahead to ensure availability."
