WORCESTER (WBSM) — Massachusetts certainly does have its fair share of interesting sandwiches, but one Worcester shop may just take the cake – or, rather, the cheesesteak.

The Bay State is already home to heralded handhelds such as the chow mein sandwich and its counterpart, the chop suey sandwich (although it’s sad the St. Paul sandwich never caught on here), and the growing-in-popularity North Shore beef.

It’s the birthplace of the Fluffernutter and it has imported the Franceshina from northern Portugal.

However, this American-Chinese mashup that comes out of Worcester might be the strangest concoction of them all.

Ziggy Bombs actually has three locations – one in Leicester, one at Boston University and the one in Worcester, right across from the city’s infamous “turtle boy” statue. It also has a food truck as well.

Ziggy Bombs focuses on Philly-style cheesesteaks, but ups the ante with some unique combinations, but none as unique as the Pu Pu Platter cheesesteak.

It’s exactly what you would think: a steak and American cheese sandwich topped with sauteed onions and roasted red peppers, but also stuffed with items you’d expect to find on a pu pu platter from your favorite Chinese restaurant: boneless ribs, chicken fingers and crab rangoons.

To finish it off, the sandwich is topped off with duck sauce.

On a recent visit to Woo Town, I stopped into Ziggy Bombs and saw it on the menu.

I figured, why not give it a go?I love a good steak and cheese. I love Chinese food. It sounded like a win-win to me.

For those who aren’t into Asian-fusion steak and cheese sandwiches, there are other speciality offerings at Ziggy Bombs like the Zig Mac (think Big Mac), Hot Honey Pepperoni and the Mexican Street Corn version, just to name a few.

North Shore Roast Beef Places Worth the Drive

North Shore roast beef is its own kind of special sandwich. From the thin-sliced rare beef to the toasted bun, it may seem easily replicable, but not very roast beef sandwich is a North Shore roast beef sandwich. The best way to order one is as a "three-way" with James River BBQ sauce, American cheese and mayo. Here are some of the spots that our listeners say do it the best.

The Best of South Shore Bar Pizza

There's pizza, and then there's South Shore Bar Pizza. Birthed in Brockton (and to this writer, perfected in Randolph – Lynwood Café is the true G.O.A.T.), it must meet certain qualifications to be considered "SSBP," which include: it's a 10-inch pie; it has a thin, cracker-like crust with minimal "flop;" the cheese is a blend that features more cheddar than mozzarella; and bonus points if you take it home between two carboard-type plates wrapped in flat brown paper bag. They also usually come with "laced" or "burnt" edges (terminology depends on where you are ordering), which is when the sauce and cheese are extended all the way to the edge of the pan, creating a crispy, flavorful coating to the crust. We reached out to the hugely popular South Shore Bar Pizza Social Club Facebook group to ask the experts to share the best of the best (in no particular order).
