Mother Duck Leads Westport Firefighters to Trapped Ducklings
It was quite the busy day for Group 2 of Westport Fire/Paramedics today. After a whopping 13 calls for service were placed during a 24-hour period, the crew was asked for one more important rescue.
A Busy Day for Westport’s Finest
Their action-packed shift was closed with a heartwarming scene not far from the Back Eddy Restaurant. A mother duck was hanging around the roadway near the rotary by the beach, giving drivers some anxious moments as they swerved to avoid her. One passerby spotted the mother and called Westport Fire and Paramedics out to the scene to help.
Ducklings Trapped in the Drain
According to Firefighter/Paramedic Todd Nunes, when the fire department showed up, they saw the mother duck quacking down to her little ducklings who had somehow gotten themselves stuck down in the street's drainage system. Like many other mothers, the mother duck seemed to have a combination of annoyance and fear at the same time towards her ducklings.

The Heartwarming Rescue
First responders opened up two access points for the drainage system and tried baiting them with some food by the second opening. The ducklings weren't moving, so they gave them a little mild startle to move them along the drain. Eventually, firefighters were able to coax out 10 little ducklings.

The very relieved mother and the 10 ducklings were scooped up by Westport Animal Control for observation.
