An escaped pig is on the lam in Mattapoisett.

We spoke to Mattapoisett resident Jennifer Thompson this morning. She got us up to speed about what was going on with the escaped pig.

Apparently, the pig (along with her mother and sister) were delivered to Michael King's farm in Mattapoisett. The pigs were kept in small cages and showed some signs of mistreatment prior to their arrival.

"When the cage was opened, this little pig bolted," said Thompson.

King, who is the chair of the town's conservation committee, was very concerned that the animals had suffered some abuse.

Pig on the Run

As a result, the wily pig has been on the run for weeks. It has made repeated appearances between Angelica Avenue and the water. There are a bunch of bushes and there's the Mattapoisett Land Trust across the street on the old Oliver Wendell Holmes property. The pig has been hanging out in those bushes.

There's a muddy spot in the land trust that is the perfect location for a pig to take a mud bath, so that has been exactly what she's been doing.

Pig Spottings

"I can see her from my kitchen window every night, she comes out around six or so, and to a field where she's safe, there's no houses around it," Thompson said. "She just munches. They're building a new house there, so there's a big pile of dirt. Last night I saw her rolling in the dirt."

Thompson said she tried to give the pig some water during the unforgiving, 100-degree heat, but the alert pig was skittish.

"She just locked eyes with my eyes," Thompson said. "My daughter was able to snap a picture before she scurried off into the woods."

Anyone who spots the escaped pig can call Mattapoisett Animal Control.
