The Westport Fire Department aided a young goat named Sweet Pea on September 9 in a heartwarming rescue that added a twist to its usual duties.

The curious goat found herself in a tight spot when her hoof got stuck in a hole while climbing onto an old wooden cable spool table. Her guardian, Sarah Serrano, had no choice but to call for help.

“It was definitely a funny situation having to call the fire station asking for help because I am not handy whatsoever and needed someone to possibly cut the table,” Serrano said. “I told them, ‘Well, since you rescue cats from trees, here’s a new one for you: How about a goat stuck in a table?'’”

"As we have mentioned before, Westport’s firefighter/paramedics answer more than your typical fire and medical calls. We are there when you don’t know who to call or where to turn to for help," the department said in a Facebook post. "Lt. Ward, Firefighter Pelletier and Firefighter T. Nunes were able to quickly free the goat from the hole in the wooden spool without incident. At last check, the animal was being evaluated by a local veterinarian. Nice job by the duty crew!”

The rescue took about 20 minutes from the time the firefighters arrived. While on the phone with a veterinarian, the firefighters received guidance to push up from the bottom and pull the hoof straight out. Fortunately, Sweet Pea was freed without the need for sedation.

"It was such a scary time, but I’m so happy she’s going to be OK,” Serrano said, relieved. “After the X-ray, nothing was broken, just a small cut.”

Thanks to the quick and careful work of the Westport Fire Department, Sweet Pea is back on her hooves and in good spirits, proving once again that no call is too unusual for these dedicated first responders.
