Massachusetts Man’s Birthday Card Drive Gets Surprise From Elmo
Sometimes a birthday card is just a birthday card. Other times, it becomes a reminder that an entire community, and even a few famous friends, are rooting for you.
Just days after Fun 107 shared the story of 26-year-old Jared Rousseau of West Wareham and his family’s hope of filling his mailbox with birthday wishes, the response has been nothing short of overwhelming. What started as a simple request has blossomed into hundreds upon hundreds of cards, letters and messages of encouragement from across Massachusetts and far beyond.
Jared, who has developmental disabilities, spent four months in a Boston ICU after being med-flighted there in January 2025. Jared has auto-inflammatory injections three times per day and a monthly infusion for autoimmune. Last year’s birthday was spent in a hospital bed, but this year, thanks to an outpouring of kindness from strangers, friends and neighbors, his family says he’s celebrating with the biggest smile they’ve seen in a long time.
A Mailbox Full of Love
During an appearance on The MGM Show, Jared’s mother, Cheryl Rowe, said the family has been blown away by the response. They have already received so many birthday cards that they’re still working their way through a giant bag filled with unopened envelopes.
“We have probably 250 to 300 that we haven’t even gone through yet,” Rowe said. “Just seeing his face light up, it gives him a little bit more to fight for.”

The cards have arrived from all over the country, with some traveling all the way from Florida and even the Dakotas. Local students from Westport Community Schools made handmade birthday cards, while The Friends of Jack Foundation stopped by to share a little extra love with Jared and his family.
A Very Special Delivery From Elmo
Then came one envelope that stood out from the rest. Inside was an official letter from Sesame Workshop along with a birthday card signed by none other than Elmo himself. For Jared, who has always adored the lovable red monster, it was a moment his family will never forget.

Before becoming ill, Jared and his family made regular trips to Sesame Place several times a year, a tradition that has been put on hold while he continues to recover and relies on oxygen. “It really made him so, so happy,” Rowe said.
