Fairhaven Girl's Autism Awareness Lemonade Stand Raises $1,000

A cup of lemonade went a very long way in Fairhaven, thanks to one local girl with a big heart and an even bigger love for her little sister.

Lucy recently set up a lemonade and iced tea stand near the corner of Hiller Avenue and Sconticut Neck Road, right across from Wood School. Between drink sales and donations sent through Venmo, she raised an incredible $1,000 by 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, September 8.

The money was not for a new toy, a shopping spree or anything for herself. Lucy chose to support a local autism cause in honor of her little sister Stella, who receives therapy at Gateway ABA Therapy in Wareham.

Squeezing for a Cause

Lucy’s mom, Joelyn Moniz, said the family plans to donate every dollar to Gateway ABA once they confirm the organization can accept the contribution. What began as a small neighborhood lemonade stand quickly became something much bigger as people stopped by, donated online and shared Lucy’s story.

“Lucy wanted to support an autism cause because of how much she loves her sister, which makes this even more special,” Moniz said.

The support even reached beyond the neighborhood. Moniz gave a special shoutout to the Old Rochester Regional football coaches for their generous donations and thanked everyone who bought a drink, sent money, shared the fundraiser or simply cheered Lucy on.

A Big Heart and Two Small Requests

This is not Lucy’s first time giving back. Last year, she raised nearly $100 for the Fairhaven Animal Shelter. Her family never expected this year’s fundraiser to reach four figures, calling the response “honestly mind-blowing.”

Perhaps the sweetest part of the entire story came after the final total was counted. Following all her hard work, the only things Lucy asked for were a squishy maker from Amazon and some ChapStick.
