It has been great to see all of the Christmas lights all over the area as Light Up SouthCoast continues to grow. I noticed on the way out to Walmart last night that the decent weather this weekend has caused the Light Up SouthCoast effort to absolutely explode! Christmas lights are everywhere.

I realized this weekend that while we had candles in our windows and some lights up in our yard, we weren't really over the top for the Light Up SouthCoast campaign. As someone who is trying to lead the charge, I felt like I had to step up my game.

I spent the day yesterday raking out the bushes in front of my house to make room for some more lights. That's when I had my idea.

As some of you know, I am a wedding DJ. One of the things that I offer is something called "uplighting." Uplighting can take a standard ballroom and turn it into a formal or fun atmosphere, depending upon what you are trying to accomplish. Instead of just having a dinky little candle, I had the idea to light up the entire window with splashes of color. Some of the windows could be green, some could be red, and some could be white. I even set up my sound system and played Christmas music as I went to work setting up my professional lighting system onto my house.

I felt like Clark Griswold as I directed the whole family to the front yard.

My excitement was over before it even started.

"Oh, no!" said my wife. "That's not going to work."

I thought she was kidding, but she wasn't. "We're not going for that look this year," she said. "We're coordinating with the neighbors and going all white."

Now, you have to understand, brides pay hundreds of dollars to have this professional uplighting enhance their receptions, but it didn't pass the Cyndi Rock test.

"We're going for a classic look," she said. "We've already done the colored lights thing, we're done with that."

To me, the colored light look gives me a warm fuzzy feeling in my belly. It makes me feel like I'm seven years old. To me, that is Christmas.

But it's a battle I knew I wasn't going to win.

I packed up the thousands of dollars in lights and put them back in storage for their next wedding. White Christmas lights it is.
