SouthCoast To See Strong Winter Storm This Week

Just as much of Massachusetts was enjoying a winter weekend warmup, Mother Nature was planning to hit us with another storm.

If you needed a reminder that New England is still deep in the winter months, another round of snow is coming our way.

Despite the breaks of sun and temperatures in the low 50s across the SouthCoast for the weekend, the week ahead has a serious winter storm brewing.

Experts with the National Weather Service released their early estimates on the winter storm expected to hit throughout the day on Tuesday, and things could pile up pretty quickly.

According to the NWS out of Norton, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for everywhere in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, except the Cape and Islands.

A winter storm watch is called when meteorologists are fairly confident that ice, sleet or snow is on the way to a region and residents should be prepared. It is the National Weather Service's second level of winter storms and has the chance to bring heavy snow/sleet and significantly impact travel.

Tuesday's Winter Storm Prediction For Massachusetts and Rhode Island

Starting in the very early hours of Tuesday morning and continuing throughout the day, almost all of Southern New England will see snow.

Though the beginnings of the storm are likely to be a snow/sleet/rain mix, the current predictions look like there will eventually be plowable snow across the area.

The NWS early snowfall maps say most of Massachusetts could see anywhere from 8-12 inches of snow throughout the day, while the coastal areas will get less accumulation.

Many areas in Rhode Island fall into the 6-8 inches range, while coastal areas from Fall River to Falmouth are expected to see 4-6 inches of snowfall though right along the shoreline, numbers just 2-3 inches.
