Rare ‘Super’ El Niño Could Make Massachusetts Winter Wild
Summer heat and humidity are still going strong in Massachusetts, but that's not stopping meteorologists from talking about the winter ahead.
This season a rare "super" El Niño is could bring a potentially historic winter to New England, with its effects possible lasting into spring 2027.
So how will it impact Massachusetts?

While weather experts all seem to agree that this year's El Niño will be extremely strong, exactly how it will impact local weather forecasts remains a mystery. One thing everyone seems to agree on, however—expect the unexpected.
What is an El Niño?
El Niño is the natural climate pattern of warming sea surface temperatures in parts of the Pacific Ocean. When these temperatures become significantly warmer, trade winds become weaker and global weather and rainfall patterns are affected.

For winter 2026-2027, the El Niño effect is expected to be much stronger than usual, leading to a potentially warmer winter than usual. But there's a catch.
The Polar Vortex Effect
In addition to the "super" El Niño, long-range forecasts show the warning signs of a disrupted polar vortex for the upcoming winter. This type of polar vortex increases the chance of Arctic air breaking out of the polar regions and bringing bitter cold snaps throughout the season.
So while one winter day might be mild across Massachusetts, the next one might be "take your breath away" freezing. And precipitation will be just as unpredictable, bringing rain or sleet to the coast, while dumping heavy bursts of snow inland.
When Could Massachusetts See the Most Snow?
Traditional snow windows, like mid-to-late January and periods throughout February, will bring the highest chance of notable snow—much like last winter's massive snowfall in late January, followed by the Blizzard of '26 near the end of February.

While another blizzard might not be in the works this upcoming winter, forecasters do expect a volatile and active winter weather season with plenty of potential storms in the Northeast. Exactly how the "super" El Niño and disrupted polar vortex will combine remains to be seen.
