The Weather Channel Just Brought the 1990s Back Online
Do you need some 1990s throwback vibes to get you through all the rough times we’re going through these days? The nostalgia hit you need is coming from the unlikeliest of sources: The Weather Channel.
The Weather Channel’s Unexpected Nostalgia Play
Anyone who had cable television in the 1990s remembers when The Weather Channel didn’t have original programming like Storm Stories, Weather Caught on Camera, or Weird Earth (shameless plug: I am featured in almost every episode of Season 1).
What The Weather Channel Was Like in the 1990s
Back then, The Weather Channel consisted mostly of rudimentary computer graphics depicting the current weather conditions and forecast, accompanied by music and occasional voiceover. Every so often, that feed would be interrupted by a person actually presenting a forecast.
Well, the 90s are back, baby.
What Is RetroCast and How Does It Work?
The Weather Channel recently launched its “RetroCast” feature at Weather.com, and it is a recreation of that classic presentation, right down to the pixelated radar.
The video only lasts a few moments, but you can refresh it as often as you’d like. The most important part, though, is that it is actually presenting you with the accurate time, temperature, current weather conditions and forecast. It’s not just for vibes. It’s also vital info.
“Your local 36-hour forecast from The Weather Channel,” the voice reminds us on occasion, along with some of the other classic Weather Channel phrases.
Why Retro Weather Feels So Comforting
For some reason, just throwing it up in a browser window and letting that smooth jazz emanate from your computer speakers is calming, reassuring, and like a big, warm hug from the time when Gen X still had all the promise of the future ahead.
I just wish it would stay running for eight or nine hours straight, so we could fall asleep to it like we used to back in the 20th century.
