Tiverton Woman Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on I-195 in Somerset
SOMERSET (WBSM) — A Tiverton, Rhode Island woman was killed in a wrong-way motor vehicle crash Thursday evening.
According to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III, Massachusetts State Police received an alert at about 7:45 p.m. on November 13 of a wrong-way driver. They also received a series of 911 calls reporting that the driver was going westbound on Interstate 195 East on the Braga Bridge. That led to a motor vehicle crash on 195 East in Somerset.
First responders arrived and found three vehicles involved in the crash. Two of the vehicles had been going the correct direction, and each of them had one occupant taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The third vehicle, a white Toyota sedan, was identified as the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. It was occupied by Gail Lopes, 69, of Tiverton. Lopes was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, along with the Massachusetts State Police.
