"We have some sad news to report," read a recent post from the Newport Restoration Foundation, in regards to one of Newport's famous Gilded Age mansions.

Rough Point’s Historic Landscape

The historic property of Rough Point in Newport, Rhode Island, had to say goodbye to a long-standing presence on the property, a Black Pine tree.

The last remaining Black Pine was taken by the Blizzard of '26, a storm that brought nearly three feet of snow to Newport.

The City by the Sea is home to legendary homes and mansions that attract millions of visitors from all over the world.

Guests can immerse themselves in history and step back into the Gilded Age while taking in some stunning views.

A Tree That Survived Generations of Storms

The grounds and landscapes have been beautifully maintained, including the Black Pine that recently met its demise.

"This resilient tree had survived generations of storms (including the Blizzard of 1978), the destructive Dendroctonus terebrans (turpentine beetle), and general harsh climate conditions at Rough Point," Newport Restoration Foundation posted. "Over the years, saplings from this tree have slowly spread next to its parent, down the ravine, and continue to thrive."

Preserving the Legacy of the Black Pine

Though they're sad to say goodbye to this hearty tree, they have plans of keeping its memory alive. "We plan to collect this tree's pinecones for the future and to create something new out of the wood," the Foundation wrote.

Newport Mansions Seen in HBO's 'The Gilded Age'

"The Gilded Age" film crews have returned to Newport, Rhode Island, for several weeks of filming for the upcoming second season of HBO's hit show. Casting calls from March gave away the International Tennis Hall of Fame as a site for several scenes and, of course, several of the historic city's epic mansions are being used as well. Here are all the places filming is expected to take place around town this May.
