Iconic Rhode Island Milk Can Hits Market for $7.49M
It's one of the most famous roadside attractions in Rhode Island—and now it could be yours.
The iconic "milk can" building in North Smithfield has hit the market for the first time in decades with a $7.49 million price tag. The listing includes more than just the 32-foot-tall, milk can-shaped structure. The 920 Eddie Dowling Highway property features 5.5 acres of land along busy Route 146, and is being represented by Tracy Sisson of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices.
While the building has fallen into disrepair, many locals are hoping the nearly 100-year-old building can once again avoid demolition and instead be restored by the right buyer.
Could the North Smithfield Milk Can Be Demolished?
Despite its long history—and even surviving a past relocation to avoid demolition—the structure is not listed on the National Register of Historic Places. That means a future owner could choose to tear it down and redevelop the land.

Still, there’s strong hope in the community that won’t happen, with many wishing to see the beloved landmark brought back to life.
The Milk Can’s Nearly 100-Year History
Originally built in 1931 in nearby Lincoln, the giant milk can operated as an ice cream stand until 1968. After sitting unused for two decades, it was moved to North Smithfield in 1988 with plans for restoration—but the project ultimately stalled.

Now, nearly 40 years later, the milk can has another chance at a comeback.
What Could It Become Next?
Whether it becomes an ice cream stand again, a mini golf attraction or something entirely new, locals are hoping this quirky piece of Rhode Island history finally gets the second life it deserves.
