Shark season has officially arrived in Southern New England and thanks to new technology we can experience it like never before.

Shark Season Returns to Southern New England

The Atlantic Shark Institute has more cameras and responders around Rhode Island waters than ever before and recently tagged their 50th juvenile great white shark.

So with more ways to keep track of more sharks this season, not only are boaters and beachgoers more aware of dangers in the waters, but we also get some amazing video footage of these fantastic fish in action.

Whale Carcass Draws Apex Predators

That was definitely the case recently when the carcass of a humpback whalewas spotted floating off the coast of Block Island. Though the deceased whale ultimately washed ashore on Crescent Beach, it was dining opportunity for predators before it got there.

Rare Great White Feeding Captured on Video

Researchers from the Atlantic Shark Institute located the carcass in open waters and knew that the sharks would soon locate it too. So they positioned themselves and captured fascinating video of a great white feeding.

Perhaps the best part of their filming was Executive Director Jon Dodd's underwater shots of this powerful predator circling its prey.

Hard not to be amazed at the sheer size of the stealthy shark or the look of its cold, black eyes. Not anything I'd want to be in the water with.

Shark Sightings Surge Across the Region

Recent activity recorded over 150 great white shark sightings in the early weeks of this season alone with some spotted swimming around Chatham, Provincetown and even New Bedford.

Combined with the other dozen or so species of shark that visit Massachusetts and Rhode Island waters each summer this is shaping up to be another extremely busy shark season on the SouthCoast.
