Rhode Island Has Only 2 Natural Waterfalls—Here’s Where to Find Them
Though Rhode Island is known as the Ocean State, it's definitely not the waterfall state.
Despite the many man-made falls created during the Industrial Revolution, there are very few natural waterfalls in America's smallest state.
In fact there are just two, though both are stunning sights to see when the season is right.
Stepstone Falls: Rhode Island’s Most Scenic Cascade
Among the 14,000 acres of Arcadia Management Area in West Greenwich is a family-friendly hike to Stepstone Falls, Rhode Island's most well-known natural waterfall.

Rather than a single dramatic drop, Stepstone is a collection of wide, flat rocks forming a series of cascading falls along the Wood River. The result is a scenic, 100-foot stretch of gentle falls that create one of the most beautiful woodsy landscapes in the state.
The hike follows the 2.7-mile Ben Utter Trail, considered manageable for most and pet-friendly. Even better, the trailhead sits across from Browning Mill Pond, where you can also find one of Rhode Island's famous hidden trolls.

While Stepstone Falls is the most popular, Cascade Brook Falls in Smithfield, is one of the state's hidden gems.
Cascade Brook Falls: A Hidden Seasonal Gem
Located in the Ken Weber Conservation Area, it's Rhode Island's tallest natural waterfall at just 12 feet. The shorter hike on a 1.1-mile loop is ideal for those looking to avoid crowds. A bit more off the beaten paths, it takes you through wooded forest lined with old textile-mill stone walls and boulders.
Best Time to Visit Rhode Island Waterfalls
The catch? Cascade Brook Falls is highly seasonal. The falls are most impressive in early spring with snowmelt or just after heavy rain. During drier summer months the falls often slow to a light drip, so time your hike around wet weather for the most dramatic drops.
Whether you're looking for a longer hike or a quick scenic stop, both of Rhode Island's natural falls are worth the trip—especially when the timing is right.
