This Deadly Sweet Treat Has Been a Rhode Island Staple for Decades
Rhode Island may be small, but it’s made a name for itself when it comes to food. I have been lucky enough to travel all over the country, but there is just something about Rhode Island’s cuisine that is unmatched.
And it’s not just the Italian food. It’s the dessert.
Rhode Island may be synonymous with pizza strips, but I think it’s time for an update.
Any true Rhode Islander knows where to go for a sweet fix.
I think it’s time the rest of the world learns about the perfection that is the Death by Chocolate from Gregg’s Restaurant.

The History of Gregg’s Restaurant
Gregg’s Restaurant & Taverns has been a family favorite in Rhode Island since 1972.
Warwick was home to the first Gregg’s when the menu was mainly deli-style sandwiches, soups, and salads.
When I was a kid, I looked forward to the pickles served with bread as much as I did the grilled cheese I would order for dinner.
Over the years, the menu grew, and so did the dessert selections.
“A main attraction was our luscious desserts, prepared strictly from scratch and using only the highest quality ingredients,” said Gregg’s. “Our award-winning desserts have become a tradition for many family gatherings and events. Gregg’s has a role in most holiday and family celebrations throughout the year.”
And I am living proof. Every Thanksgiving, I volunteer to pick up a pecan pie and a chocolate pie, and every birthday, I get treated to the Death by Chocolate.

Death by Chocolate Is a Rhode Island Staple
The mouthwatering Death by Chocolate is six layers of rich chocolate cake sandwiched between rich, dark chocolate frosting and covered with chocolate morsels.
For decades, it’s been Rhode Island’s guilty pleasure. It’s the cake I surprise my out-of-town friends with. It’s the cake that says, “Let’s celebrate!” or “Let’s indulge, because we can!”
Rhode Island may have gained a reputation for delicious food, but it’s time we put some respect on the most delicious chocolate cake in the state since 1972.
