Movie theater chain, Regal Entertainment Group, has begun checking bags of movie goers following the recent shootings in Lafayette, Louisiana and Antioch, Tennessee.

Regal is currently the largest movie theater chain in the United States. However, none of the recent shootings occurred in a Regal theater.

According to Mashable.com, it is unclear when the policy began, but several local television stations reported online that customers noticed the change in Texas, Virginia, Florida, and Ohio beginning earlier this month.

One theater in Winter Park, Florida posted a sign that read, “For the safety and comfort of all our guests: Backpacks and bags of any kind are suspect to inspection prior to entry to this facility.”

Regal issued a statement after the 2012 deadly shootings in Aurora, Colorado stating that the chain would "monitor the situation and adjust our security needs as necessary."

Over the weekend, there were reports of bag searches at screenings of N.W.A.’s 'Straight Outta Compton' at Regal theaters.

It is unclear how many of these searches were related to the new procedure and there were reports of increased security at multiple theater chains.
