Swansea residents are over the moon as big news dropped for film fanatics. Entertainment Luxury Cinemas, a brand new movie theater, is coming to town. "Finally," many said when they saw the post on social media.

Reclaiming Local Movie Memories

The Swansea area has been lacking in terms of theaters over the past few decades after local theaters began closing one by one, including the Regal Cinemas which perished in the pandemic.

Growing up not far from the area in East Providence, I remember the days where just about every movie could be found only a few miles away.

Seekonk, for example, had its Route 6 location, the Showcase Cinemas 1-10 and even the smaller Seekonk 11-12 for a brief time. Despite the closure of many local theaters, a few hung on, and many upgraded with things like reclining seats or even built new spaces from the ground up (such as Picture Show in Fall River).
