When Shirley Antil of Active Day of New Bedford, a wonderful adult day care center, said she wanted to do something very special for one her guests, little did I realize this happy birthday story would reach people from around the globe to the personal fountain pen of President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania.

All Irene Miller wanted for her 110th birthday were birthday card wishes and a small bottle of whiskey. What Irene ended up getting was beyond anyone’s expectations.

We put the word out on our radio station 1420 WBSM as well as on our app and social media. It was just a simple request: please send Irene your best wishes for her 110th birthday on December 28.

There’s an old adage that good begets good, and you can say that again! Before long the story spread to television stations and newspaper stories from all around. The Boston Red Sox and the Boston Bruins sent gifts, and dignitaries acknowledged the oldest resident of New Bedford with every citation of praise and acclaim imaginable.

But when a plain brown envelope was hand delivered to my office, that I share with Chris McCarthy, little did we realize what was inside.

The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and the First Lady Melania wanted to share their personal and warmest wishes to Irene for her milestone with a beautiful official White House card with their signatures, and a photograph that was signed by President Trump.

The radio station was abuzz with excitement as Chris, Tim Weisberg and I drove off to surprise Irene and Shirley, in the company of all the other daycare guests.

Irene Miller has lived through 18 presidential administrations, starting with Theodore Roosevelt. It's as if their spirits were with us as we presented the gifts to Irene, who was content with the thought that she had plenty of love and best wishes to keep her fulfilled for another year.

Oh, and be sure to check out her message to President Trump at the end of the video.
